Explaining Variation in Spending – Children’s Services

This report details an analysis by the LGA Research and Information team to try to explain why some councils spend more on children’s services per young person than others.

Using a technique called regression analysis, we find that over 70 per cent of variation between councils can be explained by factors beyond councils’ control, such as deprivation and population demographics, suggesting that differences in spending between councils are natural responses to the differing needs of local areas.”
