Councils are determined to help tackle violence against women and girls (VAWG) in our local communities, and work alongside police, the NHS, and charities to make sure we do all we can to protect women and girls from all forms of abuse.

Cllr Simon Blackburn, Chair of the Safer and Stronger Communities Board at the LGA, which runs the National FGM Centre in partnership with Barnardo’s, responds to the updated strategy to end violence against women and girls, published by government today.

Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Chairman of the Local Government Association’s Community Wellbeing Board, responds to a survey published today by the Voluntary Organisations Disability Group, which reveals that nearly 70 per cent of the disability care sector is threatened by the liability for sleep-in costs paid to carers.

“Mental health needs to be at the heart of a holistic approach to overall health and wellbeing, including investment in community-based services, such as youth services. Health and wellbeing should be intrinsically linked to a child-led education recovery plan."

“We are pleased Defra has listened to many of our concerns, including seeking further evidence on mandatory free garden waste collections, and recognising the need for local flexibility on compulsory food waste collections and separate collections of materials for recycling."

"Homecare workers have not been able to access the same level of testing as their colleagues working in care homes, so this announcement should redress this balance. The further rollout of these tests to live-in carers and personal assistants also needs to happen as quickly as possible."
