Climate change and net zero

Councils are taking, and must take, urgent action in their local areas with partners and their local communities to combat the negative impacts of climate change and to deliver net zero by 2050.

The LGA’s climate change hub can help local authorities transition to green economies, in line with the investment priorities of UKSPF. The primary goal of the UKSPF is to build pride in place and increase the life chances across the UK, so achieving net zero and tackling climate change is a key theme of the fund.

How the UKSPF could be used to achieve net zero:

  • Communities and Places: supporting councils achieve net zero, such as investment in retrofit, biodiversity and green spaces.

  • Supporting Businesses: supporting SMEs to decarbonise.

  • People and Skills: reskilling and training of the workforce to support the delivery of the green economy.

The LGA climate change hub offers local authorities assistance and information regarding a variety of topics on climate change, including place based leadership and communication, transport, the green economy, local collaborations, data and digital.
