Module 5 | The role of councils in LIS development

The role of councils in developing Local Industrial Strategies

One of the key place-based announcements contained in the Government’s Industrial Strategy was the introduction of Local Industrial Strategies (LIS). It outlined that places in England with a Mayoral Combined Authority will have a LIS led by the mayor and supported by LEPs. For parts of the country without a mayor, the development of the LIS will be led by the LEP.

The LGA has continued to make the case that councils are uniquely placed to support Local Enterprise Partnerships and Combined Authorities to develop ambitious Local Industrial Strategies that deliver for businesses and communities in their areas.

In recognition of this, the LGA commissioned a support offer that sought to better understand the role of councils in the LIS development process and to facilitate peer-to-peer learning within the sector.

A report capturing the key learning from this offer is available here. It outlines why councils should engage with their LIS, the roles that they can play in LIS development and the practical steps that councils can take to effectively engage.
