What will 21st century fire and rescue services look like in 2024?

This document was commissioned by the Government and was written by experts in the field of fire safety. It was published in July 2011.

Local government is facing unprecedented challenges across the board with public services working in an increasingly constrained financial context. Fire authorities have an added challenge that, while instances of fire have generally decreased, they must continue to resource services commensurate with the level of risk present in their area.

In producing this report, the Local Government Group (LG Group) aims to assist and inform fire and rescue authorities (FRAs) to deliver the spending reductions required by disseminating good practice of how efficiencies have been achieved and examples of plans and ideas emerging from FRAs in response to challenges faced by the sector.

The LGA has produced the document with Police and Crime Panel members in mind as its primary audience, but we hope it will also be of use to others who have an interest in developing their knowledge of how this essential public service is structured and governed.

Working with local partners, Worcestershire County Council has developed a smart, mobile-responsive, information-sharing ‘professionals portal’ that builds an accurate multiagency picture of children and their families and supports the county’s Family Front Door initiative, which provides a single referral pathway for accessing council and partner support services.
