Payments to teachers for working additional time

School teachers’ Q&A June 2024.

Q1: What additional salary should be paid if an employee works additional time as a teacher?

A: Teachers employed on a day-to-day or other short notice basis must be paid in accordance with the provisions of the STPCD on a daily basis, calculated on the assumption that a full working year consists of 195 days, periods of employment for less than a day being calculated pro rata. The hourly rate calculation is 1/1265. Where a teacher is employed by the same authority throughout a period of 12 months, beginning in August or September, they must not be paid more by way of remuneration in respect of that period than would have been paid had the teacher been in regular employment throughout the period.

Q2: If the teacher works part-time what would be the appropriate calculation for these additional payments?

A: Where a part time employee is engaged for additional time as a teacher for a whole day then renumeration will be calculated on 1/195 of the appropriate annual salary.

Where a part time employee is engaged for additional time as a teacher for less than a whole day, then renumeration will be calculated based on the pro rate principle of number of hours that the teacher is employed during the course of the school’s timetabled teaching week, as a proportion of the total school timetabled teaching week for teacher if employed in the same post on a full-time basis (STPCD section 40).

Q3: Are there any other additional payments that teachers can receive outside of the 1265 hours (or proportion for part-time teachers) of directed time?

A: The relevant body (as per STPCD section 20) may make such payments as it sees fit to a teacher, other than a headteacher, in respect of:

a) continuing professional development undertaken outside the school day

b) activities relating to the provision of initial teacher training as part of the ordinary conduct of the school

c) participation in out-of-school hours learning activity agreed between the teacher and the headteacher

d) additional responsibilities and activities due to, or in respect of, the provision of services relating to the raising of educational standards to one or more additional schools.

Attention should be made to ensure, where making such payments, that they are fair, equitable and consistent in application.
