In 2019, Nottingham set an ambitious target to become the first carbon neutral city in the UK by 2028. In keeping with Nottingham’s proud tradition of climate leadership, their Carbon Neutral Charter set out a vision for sustainable carbon neutrality on behalf of the council and the city’s Green Partnership.
Following a non-statutory review, Nottingham City Council has embarked on significant improvement and transformation plans, with the appointment of an improvement and assurance board, but Director of Adult Health and Social Care Sara Storey still wanted to be part of the CQC pilot.
The introduction of statutory relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE) can be contentious. The city council took on all the media handling for the school, allowing the head teacher to concentrate on communicating with parents and pupils. This case study is an example of the many pro-active and positive approaches which local authorities are taking to support inclusive RSE.
On the 18th March, leisure facilities in Nottingham closed their doors. This left large numbers of staff in Nottingham unable to continue in their roles as pool attendants and gym instructors. It also meant that thousands of members could not visit services which were longer available and that buildings were suddenly empty.
In response to rising rates of hate crime, and a desire to make communities more resilient, Nottingham City Council sought to tackle prejudice by equipping people with the skills and confidence to effectively respond to it.
As part of our work with the Early Years sector and the Food Environment through the Childhood Obesity Trailblazer programme (COTP) we decided to consult with providers (childminders, day care, after school clubs) to establish levels of knowledge, awareness, confidence and skills regarding food and nutrition. Our aim was to set a baseline from responses to help us measure progress and success against our overall project objectives. We also wanted to identify the needs of the Early Years sector and any further support required in relation to the food environment, adopting a whole systems approach.
Working groups bringing together all the different parts of the sexual health service are being set up in Nottinghamshire to enable closer cooperation. A year in, the project has already led to women being given easier access to LARC. This case study forms part of our sexual health resource.
Families with young children in Nottinghamshire are being supported with the cost of living through a network of FOOD (Food On Our Doorstep) Clubs. The clubs provide more affordable access to healthy ingredients as well as supporting families to cook and prepare family meals.
Nottinghamshire County Council have created a Yammer community to enable employees to share information on cost of living support that is available for service users.
