Responding to statistics from the UK Health Security Agency showing rising rates of whooping cough, Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz, public health spokesperson for the Local Government Association said:

“Whooping cough is a very serious condition, particularly for babies and children and it is concerning to see that cases are on the rise.

“We know the best way to protect your child from this is through vaccination. For pregnant women, getting vaccinated is also highly effective in protecting your baby from developing whooping cough in the first few weeks of their life.

“It’s really important to speak to your GP or your local health visitor about getting your child up to date with all their vaccinations as soon as possible. This will protect their health and prevent serious illness.

“Councils and their directors of public health are deeply alarmed that rates of routine childhood vaccinations are in decline and are doing all they can to drive up rates in their areas.”
