Responding to Office for National Statistics analysis of the lasting impact of violence against women and girls, Cllr Nesil Caliskan, Chair of the LGA’s Safer and Stronger Communities Board, said:

“It is incredibly worrying that incidents of violence against women and girls are so high across England and Wales. This report highlights the scale of the epidemic of violent and abusive offending and the lasting impact on the mental and physical wellbeing of so many.

“Councils are determined to help tackle Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) in our local communities, and work alongside police, the NHS, and charities to make sure we do all we can to protect women and girls from all forms of abuse. Given the Safety of Women at Night Fund has been oversubscribed with bids, we are calling on the Government to increase the fund and extend it beyond March 2022.

“A whole society response, underpinned by a government commitment to provide long-term funding and support, is needed to give women and girls confidence that there is not just the will but also the power to improve things through cultural change.”
