Resetting the relationship between local and national government. Read our Local Government White Paper

Lobbying parliament on your behalf

Over the past 20 years we have lobbied and campaigned on behalf of local authorities in England and Wales both in Westminster and in Brussels.

The LGA was formed in 1997 to be the voice of local government on the national stage. Over the past 20 years we have lobbied and campaigned on behalf of local authorities in England and Wales both in Westminster and in Brussels.

Through our Public Affairs team, we regularly arrange for local government representatives to appear in front of Select Committees, and work with parliamentarians to amend legislation, to ask parliamentary questions and to speak in debates.

We also work with our LGA president and vice-presidents, a cross-party group of members of the Commons and Lords who are our parliamentary champions, dedicated to raising local government issues in Parliament.

Here are the bills on which we are currently focusing our lobbying efforts during this Parliament:

  • Tobacco and Vapes Bill
  • Automated Vehicles Bill
  • Football Governance Bil
  • Renters (Reform) Bill
  • Economic Activity of Public Bodies (Overseas Matters) Bill
  • Leasehold and Freehold Bill
  • Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill
  • Pedicabs (London) Bill
  • The Criminal Justice Bill
  • Victims and Prisoners Bill.
