Gambling regulation: Councillor handbook (England and Wales)

The LGA has updated its councillor handbook on gambling to coincide with local authorities revising their statements of licensing principles ahead of publication in January 2019.

Councillor development

As well as outlining licensing authorities' responsibilities for gambling in their areas, the updated handbook also includes good practice for councils around statements of principles and licensing conditions and codes of practice.

To support councils in updating their statements, the revised handbook has been published ahead of the final outcome in the Government’s ongoing review of gaming machines and social responsibility. Some of the issues covered by the review, specifically FOBT stakes, are issues that the LGA and member councils have been lobbying Government on for some time. The  handbook will be further updated once the government has published its recommendations.
