Party conferences - autumn 2017

At this year’s autumn party conferences, the LGA supported our councillors as they debated the key issues facing local government with national political stakeholders.

Across the conferences, we helped to deliver a range of events, including debates, roundtables, and receptions. Our members discussed topics such as local economic growth, schools, housing, and social care, ensuring councils have a strong voice in policy discussions. Councillors from our Independent Group also spoke up for local government at the UKIP, Green and Plaid Cymru conferences.

The LGA debates

This year we discussed how local government can best tackle the current skills gap, alongside senior MPs, policy experts and our media partners, Prospect Magazine.

Skills development and reforms to technical education are at the heart of the industrial strategy, but the current system is too fragmented. The LGA has put forward a positive vision for a devolved, integrated system to improve the delivery of employment and skills. Our panels discussed how this new approach could transform local economies.

Nationally commissioned employment and skills systems are failing to address local differences, meet employers’ needs and in some cases are holding back economic growth. A high profile panel including senior national and local politicians, and the Learning and Work Institute, discussed how the skills and employment support system could be transformed to build the local economies of the future.

Speakers: Wera Hobhouse MP, Shadow Communities and Local Government Secretary (invited); Prospect Magazine (Chair); Tony Wilson, Learning and Work Institute; Cllr Howard Sykes, LGA Liberal Democrat Group Leader
