We need to continue to improve air quality, protect against flooding, and ensure our transport, planning, waste and energy policies are sustainable. The LGA is committed to supporting local government to continue on this journey, particularly as we begin the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Councils and combined authorities have an important and wide-reaching role in the skills system and their local economy.

Councils are delivering homelessness strategies that seek to respond to local conditions.

Local government plays a leading role in accelerating the shift towards achieving net zero carbon. With nearly two thirds of councils in England aiming to be carbon neutral 20 years before the national target, councils are well placed to support Government to meet its net zero carbon ambitions by 2050.

A Private Members’ Bill to require providers of electronic communications networks to grant other such providers access to their apparatus where that is necessary to ensure a consistent network coverage.

We are calling for Government to work collaboratively with councils throughout any transfer of ownership to a private company.

We are concerned that the wording of the Bill will require the public sector to spend time and money seeking market solutions for goods and services which can currently be delivered effectively by collaborative arrangements within the public sector.

The LGA welcomes the Government’s proposed reforms to public procurement including enshrining in law the objectives of public procurement.

Our primary concern is that the Bill will significantly limit public bodies from using the current vertical and horizontal procurement exemptions, which enable councils and public sector bodies to enter into collaborative arrangements to run efficient public services.
