October Black History Month

Councils’ workplaces have been enriched by the contribution of their diverse staff. The LGA is committed to supporting local government to celebrate and promote this diversity and for Black History Month we have two blogs to celebrate the event and to share the experiences of staff.

Black History Month: It is about inclusion and belonging

October is Black History Month. A month that highlights the lasting contributions of black men and women in our society. To be more fair and inclusive employers many councils are using the opportunities that this month presents as a way to explore and discover and celebrate black history, heritage and culture for their staff and their communities. Our two blogs this month tell us about the different ways that this month is being marked by councils and by our local government staff.

"For me, during Black History Month the community becomes more vibrant. Councils, libraries, community centres... and local businesses put on events for all to get involved with."

Read about what this month means to our LGA colleague Charmaine Murray.

“As part of Black History Month this year, the BAME Staff Network Committee at Hertfordshire CC has worked really hard to identity innovative ways to celebrate in a different, but effective way considering the current climate”

Nasay Franklin, HR Officer at Hertfordshire County Council leading on inclusion, tells us about what work they are doing to be a more diverse and inclusive employer and the ways the council and staff are working together to celebrate Black History Month in a meaningful way given all of the events in the last few months.
