LGA responds to latest housebuilding figures

“It is good that housebuilding is on the increase again, and that planning permissions were extended earlier in the pandemic to enable developments to continue when safe to do so."

Responding to new housebuilding figures published today for July to September 2020, which show a 111 per cent increase compared to the last quarter and reflects the relaxation of COVID-19 national restrictions, Cllr David Renard, Local Government Association housing spokesperson, said:

“It is good that housebuilding is on the increase again, and that planning permissions were extended earlier in the pandemic to enable developments to continue when safe to do so.

“Councils are committed to building the housing the country needs, which is why we are calling for councils to be given the powers and resources to build 100,000 social homes for rent each year, as part of the coronavirus recovery.

“With more than a million homes on land earmarked by councils for development yet to be brought forward by developers for planning permission, councils also need the powers to incentivise developers to bring allocated sites forward without delay, or intervene where development has stalled.”
