Responding to the further extension of a ban on evictions from social and private rented accommodation announced by the Government, Cllr Darren Rodwell, Local Government Association housing spokesperson, said:

“It is good a further extension has been announced to measures to protect tenants from eviction, and a six month notice period will be put in place. This should, for now, reassure worried tenants and allay the serious concerns councils have had over the potential risk of homelessness some private renters may have faced.

“We are also pleased when hearings resume that the courts will prioritise the most serious cases, such as those involving anti-social behaviour and domestic abuse.

“Councils will continue to work closely with tenants who are experiencing financial difficulty. But to give further protection to households, the Government should also bring forward its pledge to end ‘no fault evictions’, which would help reduce the number of people evicted, as well as commit to maintaining local housing allowance rates at the lowest third of market rents, so that tenants have greater security and can meet their housing costs.”

“We now look forward to working with government on a plan that will safeguard tenants when the ban comes to an end.”
