For #CouncilsCan Day on November 10, we are encouraging councillors and local authority staff to come together and share the valuable work they have been doing during the pandemic and to highlight the individuals or teams deserving of recognition, from 7am until 7pm.

The LGA has been providing councils with communication resources to help promote the day locally, join the national conversation and use the #CouncilsCan hashtag to present their stories.

As well as showcasing this worthwhile work, the LGA will be using #CouncilsCan Day to highlight that councils can have an even greater impact on the health and wealth of our country with proper and sustainable funding.

The LGA’s submission ahead of the Government’s Spending Review sets out how bringing power and resources closer to people is the key to improving lives, tackling deep set inequalities and building inclusive growth across the country.

Councillor Peter Fleming, Chairman of the LGA Improvement and Innovation Board, said:

“I am really looking forward to #CouncilsCan Day to see all of the truly great things councils and individuals have been doing throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The day is an opportunity to shine a light on those who have gone above and beyond to make the lives of their local residents that much better.

“From public health, adult social care and children’s services, to homelessness support and provision for the vulnerable and those in financial hardship, central government trusted councils and they delivered.”

“Over the past few months, it has been clear that councils know their local areas best and are capable of stepping up and providing outstanding services to their residents. With better funding, councils can not only maintain the services the way they are today but create new hope in our communities and improve the lives of their residents, develop a green recovery, address skills gaps and rebuild the economy so that it benefits everyone.”
