Local areas in England are at risk of losing out on £5.3 billion in just 18 months if the Government does not act fast and put in place replacement funding arrangements once the UK leaves the EU, council leaders are warning.

“The Government should urgently consult with councils on the likely impact on transport infrastructure."

The UK leaving the European Union will mean significant new additional responsibilities for local councils to check goods entering the country.

“This new funding is a positive step forward to help councils prepare their local ports for the end of the EU Transition Period."

The report, which was commissioned by the LGA and produced by Value Adage with support from the Department of International Trade, finds that nearly 6.5 million jobs in the UK are reliant on our ability to export abroad, with firms in London and the south east having the highest number of export-supported jobs.
