Chairman of the LGA, Cllr James Jamieson, responds to the announcement that Rishi Sunak MP is to become the next Prime Minister.

“It is absolutely vital that the Autumn Statement ensures that children’s services are adequately funded so councils can meet this rising demand and ensure children and their families get the support they need, as soon as they need it."

The Local Government Association is calling on the Government to help councils to develop more placements for unaccompanied children so that children can be moved directly to their long-term homes.

“It is extremely concerning to hear reports of older people either reducing or having to consider stopping their social care because of financial concerns."

“The harrowing exploitation of children and young people is a significant, increasing concern for councils who work hard to identify and protect those at risk of abuse.

Responding for the LGA Cllr David Renard, LGA housing spokesperson, said: “Everyone deserves a safe, decent, warm and affordable place to live, this is critical to the health and wellbeing of communities.

A record number of children with mental health problems were seen by social workers last year, an increase of more than a half in five years, latest figures show.

“Councils want to work with central government to develop a long-term strategy to deliver critical local services and growth more effectively. Alongside certainty of funding and greater investment, this also needs wider devolution where local leaders have greater freedom from central government to take decisions on how to provide vital services in their communities.”

LGA analysis has shown, there are significant numbers of dental deserts across the country, with many people lacking access to affordable dental care.
