Local Government Association’s Housing spokesman, Cllr Martin Tett, responds to a report by the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee on modern methods of construction, which says councils need to build more homes.

"The Committee shares our concerns over the quality of homes built under permitted development rights and the adverse impact this could have on our high streets, which councils want to see prosper and thrive, with a vibrant range of uses, including retail, culture, sport and leisure. This is why we would like to see the permitted development right removed."

“Housing must be a central part of the national recovery from coronavirus. Now is the time for a genuine renaissance in council house-building that reduces homelessness, gets rough sleepers off the streets for good, supports people’s wellbeing and is climate-friendly.”

“Councils want to continue working with government to build on the success we have achieved during the pandemic to safely accommodate people sleeping rough and prevent individuals and families from facing the tragedy of becoming homelessness."

Today’s announcement shows that the Government has listened to our calls and continued to fund homelessness services

The Local Government Association’s Housing spokesman, Cllr David Renard, responds to a report by Homes for Later Living, which claims poor housing is set to contribute to almost one million more older people suffering falls-related injuries.

“As we look to restart the housing market and build the homes the country needs, it is vital we make sure that we meet the housing needs of older people."

"There is a clear link between housing, health and social care, and this needs to be considered in the Government’s forthcoming social care green paper. Decent, quality housing for older people will include adaptations that enables them to live at home independently and for longer, keeping them fit and well and out of hospital."

Councils are working hard to deliver good outcomes for tenants and are committed to improving housing conditions for all residents.
