Cllr Mark Hawthorne, LGA Digital Connectivity spokesperson comments on the Which? Gigabit Advisory Group’s report on broadband connectivity.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become clear that access to fast and reliable broadband is more important than ever. Councils have played a key role in the roll-out of improved digital connectivity to the hardest to reach areas and have already committed £740 million to addressing market failure in these places.
“However, there are still too many barriers to gigabit broadband roll out. These include a lack of incentive for consumers to pay more to upgrade, overly complex terminology and a lack of digital skills in some areas. That’s why we are calling on the Government to provide funding for councils to put in place local digital champions who can help drive digital connectivity in their communities by tackling hurdles to rollout and encouraging greater take up of gigabit broadband where it is already available.”
